JoJo Siwashared the unexpected way golf has strengthened her relationship with her dad, Tom Siwa.
JoJo, 22, recently caught up with PEOPLE exclusively at The Snappys, Snapchat’s creator awards show, in Santa Monica, Calif.
“It’s interesting. I feel like a lot of times, people expect child stars and their parents to kind of fall out over time, [but]my parentsand I, we've only gotten closer,” she said.
She added, “I've recently taken up golf, which has brought me very close to my dad."
“I've found a lot of fungolfing with himand it's been really special because, obviously, my mom and I are so close, you know, she, she is my other half … I shouldn't say she's my other half because technically [my boyfriend] Chris [Hughes] would be my other half, but my mom is my right-hand man throughout everything in my life. And so now to have golfing with my dad's been lovely,” she continued.
The formerDance Momsstar went on to discuss her relationship with Hughes, 33, who she has been dating fornearly a year.

“It's been the best year ever. And it's only gonna get better from here. It's only gonna go up from here. But it's so wild to think that it's been a year,” she said.

“We don't have plans yet,” she said of their upcoming anniversary. “Surely, we'll celebrate somehow. Hopefully we get to be together."
JoJo also shared how she and Hughes, who she met while filmingCelebrity Big Brother U.K.,navigate the inevitable ups and downs of dating.

“It's just … he's my person. And everything in life, you'll always find the good and the bright side when it's your person,” she said.
“There's no right way to inspire anyone to make a relationship work at all. It just, it works when it works. And trust me, it doesn't work when it doesn't work,” JoJo added.
When asked if her older brother’s recent wedding gave her “wedding fever,” the performer revealed that she and Hughes are taking things in stride.
“I mean, obviously our relationship's very new. My brother's been with his girlfriend — or wife now — [for] five years. So, you know, we're, we're creeping up on our one year anniversary. So we're getting there, but we got time,” JoJo said.
